Term 5 Week 1

Welcome back! 😊 We hope you have managed to have a happy and healthy break. We are missing you all lots and are always thinking about you!

Every Monday while school is closed, we will set weekly tasks for you to complete at home. If you have any questions about the work, you can ask these on the blog using the ‘Comment’ section (don’t forget to use your initials only – you don’t need to put an email address).

Of course we want to see your wonderful work, so we have set up a new class email address that you can use to send it to us! It is: 5KT@westrise-jun.e-sussex.sch.uk

If you have any other queries, questions or concerns please ask your adult to email Mr Fairclough: mikef@westrise-jun.e-sussex.sch.uk

This week’s tasks:

  1. Maths Tasks

MyMaths

Have a look on MyMaths for your tasks. Check out our feedback on the tasks you have completed 🙂 Don’t forget to check out some of the Games, too! This week, we would like you to have a go at playing these Fractions games:

  • Fractions Golf (find it in Games / Golf)
  • Fraction Pairs (find it in Games / Pairs Games)
  • For an even harder challenge, try Fractions Pairs 2 (find it in Games / Pairs Games)

Comment below to let us know which game you liked best, and why!

Practical Maths activities

Here are some other Maths activities for you to try at home this week.

Activity 1: Estimating Weight

Find several different items of food. Pick them up, and estimate their weight in grams. Then, either weigh them, or look on the packaging, to see how close you were!

Hopefully, as you go on, you will get more and more accurate. For example, does an apple feel a similar weight to a bar of chocolate? Does a yoghurt feel about twice as heavy as a satsuma?

You could even draw up your findings in a table, like this:

ItemEstimated weight (g)Actual weight (g)

You could even add another column and use it to convert your weights into kilograms (kg).

Have fun, and let us know using the ‘Comments’ how you have been getting on!

Activity 2: Countdown

Play your own version of Countdown using the four operations (+  –  x  ÷)

This video shows you how you can set this up at home:

You could play against other people you live with!

Let us know how you’ve been getting on 🙂

  • Spellings

Here are this week’s spellings. You know lots of fun ways to practise these; rainbow writing, acrostic poems, blue for vowels, plus all the other activities we have carried out in class. On Friday, ask someone at home to test you on these by putting them into sentences (dictation), just like we do at school. Comment on this Blog post or email us to let us know how you got on.

  • Topic Task

Our new topic is Ancient Greece.

Your task is to find out some amazing and interesting facts about Ancient Greece or the Ancient Greeks. Present these facts in a creative way; whether it be through a poster, leaflet, PowerPoint or another way. This can be created by hand or on a computer. Don’t forget to send us your finished work (or a picture of it) using the email address above.

In addition to all of this, please also remember that our school Facebook page is constantly being updated with useful information and helpful hints and tips.

For even more learning activities, you can also use this fantastic website: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/home-learning-hub for a whole day of activities, updated daily. You can choose whether to follow the entire day’s timetable or pick and choose the activities you fancy.

Have a good week! We really look forward to hearing from you!

Ms K, Mrs T and Miss S 😊

Check out JW, KW and SW having fun with the Maths activities this week. Their guesses got more and more accurate as they went along. Feel free to email us your photos, so that we can post pictures of you too 🙂

Look at these fabulous and beautifully presented Ancient Greek pieces of work from SH, SW, KW and JW. Fantastic effort ROA to all of you 🙂 (We will give you these when we’re back at school).

Remember you can also email us your work at 5kt@westrise-jun.e-sussex.sch.uk

    1. It is great to hear from you, J.W.! We hope you are doing OK. Keep us updated with what else you are doing, too!
Well done for trying out the MyMaths games 🙂 Maybe if you have a few tries at Pairs 1, you could move on to Pairs 2 – it is much trickier! We are very proud of you for having a go.

  1. Hi Ms K and Mrs Taylor!
I have played Fractions Pairs 1 and 2 . Pair 1 was much easier than Pairs 2! I didn’t really understand the golf game so didn’t play.

  2. Hi!
I’ve got a bit rusty on Maths but I’ve been learning road maps and doing an hour of Spanish and an hour of MyMaths every day – even on weekends!
I miss everyone. See u when everything has calmed down.

    1. Oh wow – how cool that you’re learning Spanish! That is great. I think some other children in our class speak some Spanish, too!
We are so proud of you for doing work including MyMaths every day! Don’t forget that you can use the ‘Online Lesson’ to help you on MyMaths. There is one for every task.
We miss you too and look forward to when we can all come back to school again. Until then, let’s keep in touch on here! 🙂 Let us know what else you’ve been up to. Have you been getting out for some daily exercise, or doing some indoors?

  3. The golf game was not working very well but I tried them all. My favourite was Fraction Pairs.
I found the countdown hard – even my parents tried and they found it pretty hard too! X-D

We really miss you all. It is so strange not seeing everyone!
Don’t worry that you struggled with the Golf game – it was a tricky one! Did you try either of the Pairs games?
We hope you and your family are well 🙂
