Term 6 Week 1

Hello and welcome to Term 6 – your final term in Year 5!

We hope you had a lovely week off. We are still missing you all lots! We can’t wait to see some of the photos of all the things you’ve been getting up to!

Here are some of the things that we have been doing over the holiday week:

Ms K

Ciao 5KT 😊👋

I’ve spent the half term, swimming in the sea (with a wetsuit then braved without it-very refreshing 😊), running on the downs, walking near the Cuckmere river, and packing boxes as I will be moving home in a few weeks (5mins away). I hope you’ve all had a happy week off of school work doing different activities. If you’re finding things tough at the moment or are feeling anxious, please have a look at our Well-being blog https://thevibewrj.wordpress.com/ for helpful ideas.

I’m looking forward to this week’s School Games challenge and it would be fantastic if you all got involved too. Let’s see what position we can get to this week!

Love Ms K x

Mrs T

Hey 5KT! 👋😊
Hope you had a fantastic week’s break and enjoyed the amazing weather we had! ☀️ My first photo below is of the sunny beach. It was meant to be a nice calm one, but a seagull photobombed my peaceful photo! 😆

I’ve also included a picture of Sovereign Harbour at low tide. I find it interesting to look at the mud flats. Have any of you ever been there at low tide?

We had a very unexpected thing happen to us this week… we found a terrapin in our garden!🐢We think it is probably an escaped pet, and we are still trying to find its owner to reunite them! How random!🐢

My family and I have been enjoying flying kites this week. I’ve included a photo of my favourite one. I love it because it’s so colourful and has a pretty tail. Have any of you flown a kite recently?

I have also included a photo of Pevensey Castle, where I have been for a few walks this week. I find it an interesting and relaxing place to go.

Lastly, I miss you!! Lots!! I was thinking about you all when I was on the beach and wrote a little message on the sand to you all. ☺️I hope you are all ok and finding ways to get through this tough time. Remember, you can always email us if you need to, not just about work, but if you need someone to talk to. We are still here for you.

Big virtual hugs and high fives to you all! Have a happy week!

Happy first week of term 5KT!🌼
Hasn’t the weather been lovely ? I’ve been trying to make the most of it by sitting outside and going on walks around where I live.

I noticed a snail one morning on my plant box and it appeared to be carrying a baby snail on its back! How cute! 🐌

When I was walking around the woodlands here I came across this amazing wood carved chair! I wonder who made it? Maybe it’s of ancient descent?

I also walked along the beach where I just had to take a picture by the sea🌊. How amazing does the sea look?! I just wanted to dive straight in. I hope we are able to do this soon. Have you been near the sea recently? Whilst I was walking along the beach I came across a crab’s shell and crab’s leg! You can see in the pictures below. I think as the crabs grow bigger they actually shed their shells and grow a new one to fit them. 🦀🦀 Do you know any interesting facts about any animals or insects?

I look forward to seeing what you’ve been up to this week!

This week’s tasks

Similarly to last term, every Monday we will set tasks on here for you to complete at home.

If you have any questions about the work, or just want to say hi, you can use the ‘Comment’ section below (don’t forget to use your initials only, and you don’t need to put an email address).

Please send us your brilliant work and photos using our class email address: 5KT@westrise-jun.e-sussex.sch.uk Don’t worry if you can’t email us your work. Please keep it all in a safe place, and once we are back at school you can bring it in to show us.

If you have any other queries, questions or concerns please ask your adult to email Mr Fairclough: mikef@westrise-jun.e-sussex.sch.uk

Maths Tasks

MyMaths

Have a look on MyMaths for your tasks. Check out our feedback on the tasks you have completed.

Don’t forget to check out some of the Games, too! This week, we would like you to have a go at playing these two games:

– Angler Game

– Custard Fight

(find them both in Games / Angles)

Use the blog to let us know which game you liked best, and why!

Practical Maths Activities:

1. Dice Game:

Roll two dice (or one twice!). Make a 2 digit number from the two numbers you have rolled. Now show 4 ways of making this number, using the 4 operations ( + – x ÷)

e.g., if I roll a 3 and a 5, my number is 35. I would then show how I can calculate this number using each operation:

29 + 6 = 35 92 – 57 = 35 5 x 7 = 35 105 ÷ 3 = 35

(You could use an online dice, or write the numbers 1-6 on little pieces of paper and then pick them randomly, if you don’t have dice.)

2. Roman Numerals

How many of the Roman Numerals can you remember? We wrote our date using them in Latin lessons all year! See if you can write out the numerals up to 20, then try these numbers, too:

27, 32, 41, 50, 60, 75, 80, 96, 100, 500, 1000, 2020

Use this website if you’ve forgotten them! https://www.mathsisfun.com/roman-numerals.html

Try writing some other numbers in Roman Numerals, too! Perhaps you could try writing your door number, or the ages and years of birth of everyone in your family!

· Spellings

Here are this week’s spellings. You know lots of fun ways to practise these; rainbow writing, acrostic poems, blue for vowels, plus all the other activities we have carried out in class. On Friday, ask someone at home to test you on these by putting them into sentences (dictation), just like we do at school. Comment on this Blog post or email us to let us know how you got on.

Reading Task

“Get Caught Reading!”

This week, we would love to see photos of the books you are reading! These could be of you reading your book, or just of the book itself! Perhaps you could send us a photo of you in your favourite place to read. If so, it would be great if you could tell us why you like to read there. We would love to share these photos on the blog!

· Topic Task: What exactly is the story of the Trojan Horse?

The story of the wooden horse of Troy is over 3,000 years old. It is one of the most well-known and popular stories from any time in history, but historians strongly disagree about how authentic (truthful and accurate) it really is.

Some believe that the story is factual, whilst others believe it is merely a Greek myth, or no more than a traditional story that almost certainly didn’t happen.

For this task, we would like you to reach a decision as to whether the story of the Trojan Horse is historical fact or merely fiction.

To do this you will have to evaluate the evidence that exists, look at stories on the internet, watch YouTube videos, and even ask family members what they know of the story. Remember that the story has changed a lot as it has been passed down through the generations.

Have fun being a historical detective!

Let us know what your verdict is – fact or fiction?!

· Science

We know that some of you really enjoyed doing last term’s Science investigation! We just know you will love this week’s!

This week’s Science investigation is all about bones!

You will need the following items for the practical investigation in this lesson: a plastic cup, mug or similar shaped plastic container, an egg or a chicken bone or a piece of chalk and some distilled vinegar, which is available in most supermarkets

Please remember to send photographs of you and your findings or write a comment on this blog post!

Commonwealth Games Bronze-Medallist Netball Star, Tamsin Greenway wishes you all a BIG good luck in your netball and basketball challenges this week! 🏀🏐👟

In addition to all of this, please also remember that our school Facebook page is constantly being updated with useful information and helpful hints and tips. If your grown up isn’t signed up, send us an email and we can direct them to this.

For even more learning activities, you can also use these fantastic websites:
